Sister Vincent Walz, 83, died on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 3:50 p.m. at Seton Residence. Sister Vincent (Phyllis Marie) was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 25, 1928 to Jane Margaret Donovan and Vincent J. Walz. She was one of seven children. She received her high school diploma in 1946 from St. Joseph Academy in St. Louis. She entered the Daughters of Charity in 1945 and after her initial formation was assigned to St. Vincent and St. Boniface in Perryville, Missouri as an Elementary Teacher. In 1951, Sister received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Fontbonne College, St. Louis, Missouri. She was then sent as an Upper Elementary Teacher to St. Stephen Grade School in New Orleans. In 1952 Sister was assigned to St. Vincent DePaul Grade School in San Francisco, California as a Primary Teacher. She held this same assignment in 1954 when she was sent to Marian School in Montebello, California. In 1957 Sister took on the role of student at Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and in 1967 she continued her studies at St. Louis University in St. Louis and later that year was a part-time teacher at Marillac College in St. Louis. In 1962 Sister was a Secondary High School Teacher at Laboure High School in St. Louis. She continued in the Education Ministry at Marillac Collage, St. Mary Seminary in Perryville, The University of Texas, Archbishop Oscar Romero Center in El Paso, TX, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, MO and Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington. In 1968 Sister received a PhD in English and History. Sister was active in many Social Justice committees. She also belonged to several Interprovincial/collaborative Committees such as the El Paso Chorale, the El Paso Chorale/El Paso Symphonic Chorale. She was a member of Centro San Vicente and DCCS-EP-DC Community Services. Sister is survived by her sister, Barbara Weidenbenner of Shiloh, Illinois, two sisters-in-law, Barbara Walz of Springfield, Illinois and Freda Walz of DeSoto, Missouri, nieces and nephews and her Sisters in Community. Visitation will be held at Seton Chapel after 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 8, 2012. A Mass of Resurrection will be on Monday, April 9, 2012 at 11 a.m. in the Seton Residence Chapel. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, St. Louis, Mo 63108-2622.
